In some odd sense it seems like home. The week of GDC is the way things should be all the time. Everybody is here for the Games…one way or another. Everywhere you go you are surrounded by old friends and meeting new ones. Sober (and not so sober) discussions of everything from design to pipelines to marketing (ugh). Some mundane, others esoteric. Opportunities so thick you have trouble moving through them because they are all crammed so tightly together.
OK, so I am not a hot rod networking guy who collects 200 business cards a day and then goes back to his hotel room and inputs, categorizes and notates them into a slick business contact database. Maybe I should be, but that’s just not the way I work. This is all about making contact to me. Making friends and hooking up. And about getting the word according to The Game Attorney out to the developers a care about and represent.
This year I am doing two roundtables…one on developer deals that I hope will be remain regular part of the GDC landscape for years to come, and one on my work with the IGDA on the Employment Contact Quality of Life Certification project that I chair. But there’s lots of other stuff going on as well. Meeting and parties and appointments and late night debauchery. In a sense it’s a marathon for the week. This is Tuesday and things are just getting in gear.
It’s around noon and this is the last day I have to sleep in.,…the next three days start at 8:30 - 9:00 AM every morning and , if thing continue at the rate they are going now, end up well after 4 AM. No big deal in the real world..but here at GDC where you hit it hard every night…keeping functional can get dicey. So far, my nights have ended at 4, 5, and 5:30 AM respectively for the past three nights….I generally shoot for 4 hrs of sleep a night. But I doubt that I’ll be able to hit that mark for the remainder of the week. Fortunately I had much of today open so I am sleeping in and working on the outlines for my presentations…and posting this up for some unknown reason.
Don’t come here for the typical GDC event coverage…but you may get a personal taste of what is going on in my part of the GDC experience….if I ever get around to doing another post before the week runs out on me!
So, it’s GL & HF @ GDC!!!
